Fisher Marketing Club Presents First-Ever Marketing Week

St. John Fisher College’s American Marketing Association (AMA) Chapter recently sponsored a week full of events in honor of AMA Marketing Week. From October 3 through October 7, the Chapter hosted guest speakers and held workshops for students of all majors.

The first event was a presentation by Ben Sear of Jay Advertising, a local agency. He presented, “Social Media and Branding,” and shared his real-world experience working for an agency and the increasing importance of social media and branding.

A professional panel was the next featured event, and included Laurie Valentino from Fisher’s Career Center; Barry Strauber of Martino Flynn; and Daniel Crandall ’11 of Paychex. All three shared tips about searching for that first job, interviewing, what employers might be looking for in today’s job candidate, and the importance of a stellar résumé. In addition, Crandall spoke more in-depth about his very recent transition from college to the real world.

Barbara Van Laeken of IBM held a résumé- building workshop where she discussed what she looks for when hiring both internal and external candidates.

The Chapter was also a co-sponsor of travel writer and entrepreneur Tom Brosnahan’s visit to campus.

And lastly, they held “Operation: AMA SAVES LIVES Scavenger Hunt,” a campus-wide challenge. Students were charged with searching for a variety of items hidden inside and outside. The goal of the scavenger hunt was to raise awareness of organ donation, a cause supported by the National American Marketing Association. The hidden items represented the main organs that can be donated to people in need.
