Political Science and Communication Tag-Team in the Big Apple
From March 10-12, Dr. Jim Bowers, professor in the Political Science Department, and Dr. Todd Sodano, assistant professor in the Communication/Journalism (C/J) Department, took a group of 27 students to New York City for a pre-professional development weekend.
The weekend started with a tour of NBC Studios, where C/J students learned about the prestigious NBC Page Program. The program recruits, develops, and retains talent, and is a primary pipeline to entry-level positions at NBC Universal. Students from Fisher's Pre-Law Club visited several law schools to learn more about their programs.
The C/J students then had an opportunity to meet with nine producers and research analysts from MTV, Vh1, and Nickelodeon at MTV Networks, who talked about life in the big city, working in TV/film, and how they made the transition from small towns and colleges to a big city.
On Friday night, with Director of Alumni Relations Chris Sullivan's help, the group attended a networking event at Houndstooth Pub, owned by a Fisher alum. C/J alums Bob Meadows, Brett McCann, and Evan Malone were a few of the many alumni who met with current students to share insights on working in the industry. The alumni were representing companies including SyFy, Tribeca Film Institute, New York City Ballet, Atlas Media Group, and think/feel. In addition, a second-year law student at New York University (NYU) Law School met with the Pre-Law Club earlier in the day.
For the second straight year, the C/J group used social media to promote and document the Joint Journalism Historians Conference, held this year at NYU's Arthur L. Carter's Journalism Institute. C/J associate professor Dr. Dougie Bickett joined the group for the conference. Students shot videos, conducted interviews, Tweeted live, and posted Facebook updates from the site and around Manhattan. Over the next two weeks, students will finish editing videos which will then appear on the conference's Media History Exchange website.
