03/18/2011
On March 11 and 12, St. John Fisher College hosted over 120 K-12 math teachers and college faculty as they participated in the Association of Mathematics Teachers of the Rochester Area's (AMTRA) Annual Spring Conference.
Participants attended three-hour workshops on a range of topics related to teaching mathematics.
Dr. Barney Ricca, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Director of Fisher's Graduate Math, Science, and Technology in Education (GMST) Program, presented a workshop on "Preparing for Algebra: Structuring and Patterning Numbers." Beth Walker, also a full-time faculty member in the GMST program, presented "Messing Around with Fractions" to current elementary teachers.
AMTRA Vice President Rebecca Tiffin, Math Center Director and member of the Mathematical and Computing Sciences Department, played an integral role in coordinating the event. In addition, four Fisher math majors, Lindsay Hojnowski, Morgan Kuryla, Katie Grimes, and Jennifer Cassetti, participated in the workshops and assisted in conference activities.
AMTRA is an affiliate of Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS) and supports professional development of local math teachers.
