Professor Researches in Spain
Dr. Francisco Plata, Assistant Professor in the Modern Languages and Cultures Department, recently spent two weeks in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where he spent time researching modern Spanish literature.
Thanks to a faculty development grant from the College, Plata was able to visit the Gonzalo Torrente Ballester Foundation, a writer's archive that can only be consulted in Santiago de Compostela. Plata researched artist-novels, which describe the creative learning of a young artist, centered on the development of their aesthetic ideals, struggles to accomplish those ideals, and the quest for self-achievement.
As a result of his trip, he has been asked to submit an article on his research to the next issue of La Tabla Redonda, a scholarly journal from the University of Vigo, Spain. In addition, he will be presenting elements of his research at an upcoming international conference on Torrente-Ballester at the University of Münster, Germany.
