McCarthy Visits Herkimer with “Flight of the Wretched” and Meets ’87 Alum
Michael McCarthy, Director of Safety and Security at St. John Fisher College, recently made a stop in Herkimer, N.Y. with his newly released book, “Flight of the Wretched: A Journey to the New World,” where he met with Herkimer Mayor Mark Ainsworth, a 1987 graduate of the College.
The book is a historical fiction based on Irish and American history. His story includes a stop just outside of the village of Herkimer, so McCarthy included the town in the book since the lead characters travel from Albany by the Erie Canal. It’s the story of a young farmer in Ireland who must face the reality of a grim future, starvation, and a corrupt justice system in the mid-1800s. During his flight from a seemingly hopeless situation, he meets a young woman who is also feeling personal demons. Together, they seek substance, love, and survival in a new and unfamiliar world.
During his visit to the village, McCarthy presented a signed copy of the book to the Mayor. The book is now available for purchase at the Herkimer County Historical Society as well.
McCarthy’s first book, “From Cork to the New World: A Journey for Survival,” was published in 2009.
