Wellness Wednesdays Promote Self-Esteem, Healthy Body Image
Throughout the month of October, the Women and Genders Studies program presented Wellness Wednesdays, an initiative by the program and the newly created Make a Difference program (MAD) aimed to make people think about a healthy body image, positive self-esteem, and other psychological issues.
The initiative debuted on October 11 with the “What’s on the Inside?” display. Inside of the Lavery Library walkway, large pieces of paper were adhered to the walls and individuals were invited to trace an outline of themselves and then describe their true character inside of their body shape using adjectives. The goal was to have a collective mural on display throughout the day.
“Often times, we get caught up in the latest fashions, styles, and what is popular. Many of us engage in negative self-talk that diminishes the strength of our character,” said Dr. Emily Dane, Assistant Professor. “When we try to squeeze ourselves into the tiny box that popular media says we should be in, we spend our time focusing on the outside and not on the inside. The College’s founding fathers wanted the campus community to focus on teaching goodness, discipline, and knowledge. These character traits live inside us, regardless of what our outer shape is.”
October 19 was “National Love Your Body Day,” and students shared things they like and don’t like about their bodies on posters that were displayed outside of Lavery Library. The goal was to show just how balanced the campus community is when it comes to body-image.
Lastly, on October 25, the program hosted a wellness trivia game called “Fact or Crap.” Over 60 questions, ranging from healthy eating habits to the topic of domestic violence, were displayed all day, challenging participants to test their knowledge.
“Wellness Wednesdays were important because they were designed for Fisher students to recognize why they are special and remind them to take better care of themselves,” said student Gabriella Parrinello. “We have to be aware of what it takes to be well mentally, physically, and emotionally. This initiative was designed to celebrate and educate.”
