English Students to Present Essays at National Conference
Four English majors will be presenting at next week's Sigma Tau Delta English International Honor Society Convention in Pittsburgh. The conference theme is "Beyond Words," and will take place March 23-26.
Dena Beacham, Samantha Maley, Sarah Christy, and Maria Quebral will be presenting "Invisible Culture," including papers that explore cultural artifacts (etiquette books, pulp magazines, medical books) from the past in order to see what they reveal about the culture that created and purchased them.
The students originally did this work for a senior capstone course, applying their analysis to a work of literature. The literature focus for their work included The Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt, George Orwell's 1984, Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, and The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton.
