2011 Mashup Night
On Friday, April 15, St. John Fisher College will hold its first-ever Mashup Night, highlighting student-produced mashup videos. The College's Digital Cultures and Technologies minor, working alongside the English and Communication/Journalism Departments, are sponsoring the event, which was also a contest among students who were competing for a cash prize.
Students created videos with new political and aesthetic meaning using existing footage from multiple sources – including scenes from famous movies, television programs, and news broadcasts.
The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with a presentation of the film "RiP!: A Remix Manifesto." Immediately following, there will be a roundtable discussion on "Copyright, Remix, and Participatory Culture," with faculty members Dr. Michael Gibbons, Dr. Rik Hunter, Professor Jeremy Sarachan, and Dr. Todd Sodano. Student mashup videos will then be presented, and the winner of the contest will be announced.
The event takes place in Basil 135, and is free and open to the public.
