Chemistry Faculty Team Receives Grant
07/14/2011
Drs. Kim Chichester, Irene Kimaru and Kristina Lantzky – professors in St. John Fisher College's Chemistry Department – recently received a grant from the Division of Analytical Chemistry of the American Chemical Society.
The grant, in the amount of $500, will support a project that the faculty and their students will be doing with students from East Rochester High School in the fall.
Fisher chemistry students will mentor East Rochester juniors and seniors throughout the project, when they will test Buckland Creek in Brighton for baseline levels of analytes (substance or chemical constituent) and overall water quality. The goal is to determine the effects of urbanization on the area waterway. Students will use a variety of techniques and tools, along with a water testing kit, to gather data. The results will be given to the Department of Water Quality for Rochester – Division of Pure Waters, coordinated with Fisher's Advanced Analytical Chemistry Class' results.
Results will also be presented at Fisher's annual Environmental and Sustainability Fair and the Arts and Sciences Showcase. The project is slated to begin in October.
